make a U turn on uncomfortable nervy sensations

Changes in movement whether across, along or upon the nerve can occur over time with stress, injury and work. As a result nerve health can change as it is dependant on the structures surrounding it.

The health of our nervous system is very important for general musculoskeletal health and well being. Neural structures provide stimulus to skin, muscle, tendons, bone, fascia and blood vessels. Their ability to move relative to the structures will determine whether neural symptoms in the periphery (arms/forearms/hands) (hips/ legs/ ankles) are present. When nerves which exit the spine are compressed they can cause radiating symptoms further from their source which are described as sharp, electric, lancinating, or burning. Often pins & needles and numbness are experiences common to sufferers of these conditions. The goals of manual therapy are to desensitise the nerve by changing how it interacts with its surrounding tissue, often improving blood flow to it.

Nerve neurodynamic maneuvers are reported to improve neck pain, arm pain, disability and function when compared with advice to remain active.

Tests are performed in clinic to examine the level of sensitivity in the nerves pathway and can help with determining a probable therapeutic course of treatment.

Neurodynamic tests are maneuvers that place the peripheral nerves on strain and are used in conjuction with other tests to assess whether the patients symptoms are related to changes in the nerves health.

Two options available to the therapist to assess for these changes is the neural sliders and tensioners.

The main difference between tensioners and sliders is that tensioners apply strain at the nerve bed by sequentially moving joints whereas sliders reduce the strain by the movement of other joints.

Noted it's a bit of technical jargon but essentially delivering a therapeutic outcome for nerve disorders requires the careful assessment for it. On that note passive movements by the clinician that aim to desensitise uncomfortable nerve sesnasation can be prescribed for home based exercises. Changes in uncomfortable nerve sensations can resolve with time, good nutrition, and regular exercise.
